NATIONAL COMMODITY POLICY

  1. The country’s plantation industry and commodities include oil palm, rubber, kayan wood, cocoa, pepper and kenaf. The country’s commodity industry structure, including palm oil, rubber, timber, cocoa, pepper and tobacco, has undergone a change from a commodity raw material producer to a market-oriented producer of high value-added downstream products. In order to ensure that the country’s commodity industry remains competitive and market-oriented, the National Commodity Policy was enacted with the goal of transforming the country into a global commodity hub through a seven-core strategic approach that includes:

    • Empowerment of Industries;

    • Modernization of Production Activities;

    • Production of Various High Value Added Products Through Research, Development and Commercialization;

    • Generation of New Sources of Income;

    • Strengthening of Existing Markets and Expansion of New Markets;

    • Strengthening the capabilities of smallholders and entrepreneurs;

    • Human capital development.

    The implementation of the National Commodity Policy (NCP) comprehensively and equitably with the commitment of all industry players will ensure the continued strength and competitiveness of the national commodity industry, and it will contribute to the achievement of the goal to make Malaysia a high-income country by 2020.
